Holy Spirit Hospital Sets New Milestone in Cardiac Care with Rare PTMVR Procedure
Mumbai: In a landmark achievement, Holy Spirit Hospital’s Heart Center has successfully performed a complex Percutaneous Transcatheter Mitral Valve Replacement (PTMVR) using the advanced LAMPOON technique — a first of its kind for the hospital and a major step forward in minimally invasive heart procedures.
The patient, Mr. Gopinath Prusty, a 71-year-old man with a history of coronary artery disease, triple bypass surgery, and double valve replacement, arrived with severe breathlessness on minimal exertion (NYHA Class IV). A 2D echocardiogram revealed severe mitral regurgitation due to a flail leaflet in the bioprosthetic mitral valve. His left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) was preserved at 60%.
Considering the high risk of repeat open-heart surgery, the expert team opted for a minimally invasive PTMVR. The real challenge was a narrow left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT), which was successfully managed using the LAMPOON (Laceration of the Anterior Mitral Leaflet to Prevent LVOT Obstruction) technique. The procedure, performed via the right femoral vein, was completed without complications.
Post-procedure echocardiography showed no mitral regurgitation, and the patient was stable and symptom-free the following day.
“This was a highly satisfying case and a proud moment for our team,” said Dr. Mukul Kaushik, Interventional Cardiologist, Holy Spirit Hospital. “It reflects our hospital’s growing capabilities in advanced structural heart interventions.”
This breakthrough underscores Holy Spirit Hospital’s commitment to bringing cutting-edge cardiac solutions to patients through skill, teamwork, and compassionate care.
