Successful Balloon Mitral Valvotomy at Holy Spirit Hospital

Holy Spirit Hospital recently marked an important milestone in interventional cardiology with the successful completion of a Balloon Mitral Valvotomy (BMV) at its Cath Lab on 5th March. The procedure was performed under the expertise of Dr. Nitesh Karnire, Cardiologist, with the support of a multidisciplinary medical team.

The patient had initially consulted Dr. Susan for a planned hysterectomy. However, during evaluation, the patient was diagnosed with severe Mitral Stenosis (MS)—a condition in which the mitral valve of the heart becomes narrowed, restricting blood flow. To ensure the patient’s safety during the upcoming surgery, the medical team decided to first address the cardiac condition through a Balloon Mitral Valvotomy.

Balloon Mitral Valvotomy is a specialized interventional cardiology procedure used to treat severe mitral stenosis. In this procedure, a catheter with an Inoue balloon is guided to the mitral valve and carefully inflated to open the narrowed valve, improving blood flow without the need for open-heart surgery.

Given the complexity and high-risk nature of the procedure, Dr. G. P. Ratnaparkhi, one of the few interventional cardiologists in Mumbai with extensive experience in performing BMV, was invited as a proctor to guide and monitor the intervention. As a standard precaution for such procedures, the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) team was also kept on standby.

The procedure was completed successfully without complications. The results were highly encouraging—the mitral valve area increased from 0.9 cm² to 2.0 cm², significantly improving blood flow and reducing pressure gradients across the valve. Most importantly, the successful intervention helped avoid the need for surgical mitral valve replacement, allowing the patient to proceed safely with the planned hysterectomy later.

This achievement was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the hospital’s medical and support teams. Special thanks were extended to Dr. G. P. Ratnaparkhi for his guidance, Dr. Susan for referring the patient, the Cath Lab technicians Mr. Manohar and Mr. Rohan, the nursing staff, Dr. Shridhar and the CTVS team for surgical backup, Dr. Manish Arya and the CCU team, as well as Sister Lissy and Sister Ligi for their support.

The successful completion of this complex procedure highlights Holy Spirit Hospital’s commitment to advanced cardiac care and multidisciplinary collaboration, ensuring patients receive safe, effective, and world-class treatment.
