Nursing Assistant
Overview
In Holy Spirit Hospital, the Nursing Assistants department, often called Nurse Aide or Nursing Assistant, plays a vital role in direct patient care. They work under the supervision of registered nurses (RNs) and licensed practical/vocational nurses (LPNs/LVNs). Their responsibilities include assisting patients with daily living activities, monitoring vital signs, reporting changes in patient condition, and maintaining a clean and safe environment.
Services
- Assisting with daily living activities:
This includes tasks like bathing, dressing, feeding, toileting, and mobility assistance (transferring patients between beds and wheelchairs).
- Monitoring vital signs:
Nursing assistants regularly check and record patients’ temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure.
- Reporting changes in patient condition:
They observe and document any changes in a patient’s physical or mental state and communicate these observations to the nursing staff.
- Maintaining a clean and safe environment:
This involves keeping patient rooms tidy, ensuring proper hygiene, and assisting with infection control measures.
- Assisting with medical procedures:
They may help with simple procedures like dressing changes or setting up equipment.
- Providing emotional support:
They offer comfort and reassurance to patients and their families.

- Physical stamina: The job requires standing, walking, and lifting patients.

- While formal academic qualifications may not be mandatory, on-the-job training and certification programs (like Certified Nursing Assistant – CNA) are common.
- Training typically covers basic nursing skills, patient care procedures, vital sign monitoring, and infection control.
