Vertigo Clinic

Overview

The Vertigo Clinic is a specialized unit dedicated to the diagnosis, evaluation, and management of patients experiencing dizziness, balance disorders, and vertigo. Vertigo is a common symptom with various underlying causes, ranging from inner ear disorders to neurological conditions. Our clinic offers a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to identify the root cause and provide effective treatment.

  • Rehabilitation and Management:
Depending on the diagnosis, treatment plans may include medical therapy, vestibular rehabilitation exercises, canalith repositioning maneuvers (such as the Epley maneuver), and lifestyle modifications. Patient education and preventive strategies are also integral parts of care.

  • Holistic and Patient-Centered Care:
The Vertigo Clinic emphasizes compassionate, evidence-based care tailored to the individual needs of each patient. Our goal is to reduce symptoms, restore balance, and improve quality of life.

Whether vertigo is occasional or persistent, the Vertigo Clinic provides comprehensive support for patients to regain control and confidence in their daily lives.

Services

Diagnostic Tests for Vertigo

1. Fukuda–Unterberger Test
The patient is instructed to march in place with eyes closed for approximately 30 seconds. A tendency to lean, drift, or rotate to one side may indicate dysfunction of the inner ear (labyrinth), which is often associated with vestibular disorders.

2. Romberg’s Test
The patient stands with feet together and arms at the sides, first with eyes open and then closed. If the patient loses balance or becomes unstable with eyes closed, it may point to a central nervous system or proprioceptive issue affecting coordination and balance.

3. Head Impulse Test
This test evaluates the vestibulo-ocular reflex. While the patient focuses on a fixed point, the examiner gently moves the patient’s head side to side. Abnormal eye movements during this test may indicate a problem with the inner ear balance system.

4. Vestibular Test Battery
A series of advanced diagnostic tests are conducted to assess the function of the vestibular (balance) system. These tests help identify the specific source of imbalance or dizziness, whether related to the inner ear or neurological causes.

Treatment Options for Vertigo

Treatment at Holy Spirit Hospital is personalized based on the underlying cause of vertigo. Common therapeutic options include:

  • Medications – To reduce symptoms like nausea, dizziness, and inflammation.

  • Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT) – A specialized form of physiotherapy that helps improve balance and reduce dizziness through targeted exercises.

  • Canalith Repositioning Procedures (CRP) – Techniques such as the Epley maneuver are used to treat Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) by repositioning displaced inner ear crystals.

  • Surgical Intervention – In rare cases, surgery may be necessary for structural abnormalities or persistent balance disorders not responsive to conservative management.

Our integrated team of ENT specialists, neurologists, and physiotherapists work together to ensure accurate diagnosis and effective relief from vertigo, helping patients return to a stable and confident daily life.

Infrastructure and Technology

No equipment found for this department.

The Vertigo Clinic at Holy Spirit Hospital is equipped with advanced diagnostic infrastructure and technology designed to evaluate and treat patients suffering from balance disorders and vertigo. Our facility offers a patient-friendly, specialized environment where accurate assessment and effective management of vestibular conditions is prioritized.

Key Features and Technologies:

  • Videonystagmography (VNG) System:
Our clinic features a state-of-the-art VNG machine, a non-invasive diagnostic tool that records involuntary eye movements (nystagmus) using infrared cameras. VNG helps assess the function of the inner ear and central motor functions by monitoring eye movement patterns during various positional and caloric tests.

  • Dedicated Vestibular Testing Room:
A sound-proof, low-light room designed specifically to conduct sensitive vestibular evaluations in a controlled and distraction-free environment.

  • Computerized Balance Assessment Platform:
Enables posturography testing to analyze a patient’s balance control under different sensory conditions, useful for diagnosing multifactorial causes of dizziness.

  • Audiometry and Tympanometry Units:
Integrated hearing tests to identify any underlying auditory issues related to vertigo, such as Meniere’s disease or vestibular neuritis.

  • Advanced ENT and Neurology Consultation Suites:
Spacious, well-equipped rooms for detailed clinical assessments, with tools for otoscopic examinations and neurological evaluations.

  • Digital Imaging and Radiology Support:
Immediate access to CT and MRI scans when structural brain or ear abnormalities are suspected, ensuring rapid and comprehensive evaluation.

  • Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy Area:
A dedicated physiotherapy zone with specialized equipment and trained therapists for conducting vestibular rehabilitation exercises.

With these state-of-the-art technologies and facilities, the Vertigo Clinic at Holy Spirit Hospital is well-positioned to provide accurate diagnosis, effective treatment, and holistic care for patients experiencing dizziness, imbalance, or vestibular disorders.
