Paediatric Nephrology
Overview
Paediatric nephrologists are the specialists who look after children with kidney problems. They diagnose, treat, and manage many disorders affecting the kidney and urinary tract, including kidney failure, high blood pressure, inherited kidney diseases, kidney stones, urinary tract infections, and abnormalities in the urine such as blood and protein. They also know how to evaluate and treat problems with growth and development that are specifically related to chronic kidney disease.

Although kidney problems are deemed to be rare in the pediatric age group, a significant number of children do suffer renal problems, both developmental and acquired. Some easily treatable conditions such as post-infectious glomerulonephritis & steroid-sensitive nephrotic syndrome are more common in childhood. Renal conditions unique to children include congenital anomalies of the kidneys & urinary tract (CAKUT), posterior urethral valves, vesicoureteric reflux, voiding dysfunction, recurrent urinary tract infections & the wide spectrum of renal tubular disorders with presentation as varied as metabolic acidosis and dehydration, failure to thrive, rickets, recurrent renal stones, electrolyte abnormalities &hypertension. Many of these conditions cause severe morbidity and/or progress to renal failure if left untreated. Appropriate management of renal failure & early initiation of dialysis & renal transplantation is particularly important in children with end-stage renal disease considering the long life expectancy in children. Management of nutrition & immunization also poses challenges in children with kidney disease.
The Division of Pediatric Nephrology specializes in the diagnosis and management of children with a variety of acute and chronic kidney-related disorders. We evaluate and treat children with the complicated nephrotic syndrome, hypertension, hematuria, proteinuria, renal tubular acidosis, nephrolithiasis, glomerulonephritis, acute and chronic kidney failure. We also provide comprehensive care for pediatric patients with end-stage kidney disease, including care to patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis, pre-transplant workup and follow-up care of children after kidney transplantation.

Infrastructure and Technology
No equipment found for this department.
Key Infrastructure & Services Include:
Specialised Evaluation for Bladder Dysfunction
We provide expert management for bedwetting and urinary issues in children, with diagnostic facilities such as uroflowmetry and invasive urodynamic studies to assess bladder function accurately.Ultrasound-Guided Kidney Biopsy & Histopathology
Our facility enables safe, ultrasound-guided kidney biopsies in children. These are analysed with detailed renal histopathology—including light microscopy and immunofluorescence—for precise diagnosis.Genetic Testing & Counselling
In collaboration with clinical genetics services, we offer support for diagnosing and counselling families about genetically mediated kidney diseases.Support for Kidney Transplantation
For children with end-stage kidney disease, we provide pre- and post-transplant care. The transplant program is supported by access to advanced immunological testing through external partnerships.Access to Rare Disease Treatments
We assist families in obtaining critical medications like Eculizumab for rare conditions such as atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome.Continuous Learning & Excellence
Our paediatric nephrology team stays abreast of the latest advancements through ongoing academic programs, case discussions, and professional development activities.
