Hepatobillary
Overview
Hepatobiliary refers to the medical specialty that deals with diseases and disorders of the liver (hepato-), gallbladder, bile ducts, and biliary tree. It is a subspecialty within gastroenterology and surgical gastroenterology that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of benign and malignant conditions affecting these organs.
Key Organs Involved
Liver – vital organ involved in detoxification, metabolism, and bile production
Gallbladder – stores bile produced by the liver
Bile Ducts – carry bile from the liver and gallbladder to the small intestine
Common Hepatobiliary Conditions
Liver diseases – Hepatitis (A, B, C, etc.), cirrhosis, liver abscess, fatty liver, liver failure
Liver tumors – Hepatocellular carcinoma, metastatic liver disease
Gallbladder disorders – Gallstones, cholecystitis, gallbladder cancer
Bile duct disorders – Choledocholithiasis (stones in bile duct), cholangitis, bile duct strictures, bile duct cancers (cholangiocarcinoma)
Congenital anomalies – Biliary atresia
