Cornea Surgery
Overview
The cornea is the transparent front layer of the eye that plays a crucial role in focusing vision. When the cornea becomes damaged, scarred, infected, or misshapen, it can lead to blurred vision or even vision loss. Corneal surgery involves a range of procedures aimed at restoring vision, relieving pain, and improving the appearance of a diseased or damaged cornea.

Services
At Holy Spirit Hospital, our Ophthalmology Department provides advanced diagnostic and surgical care for various corneal conditions. Services include:
1. Corneal Transplantation (Keratoplasty)
Penetrating Keratoplasty (PKP) – Full-thickness corneal transplant
Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty (DALK) – Partial-thickness transplant preserving healthy inner layers
Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSEK/DMEK) – Replacement of only the inner corneal layer for quicker recovery and fewer complications
2. Pterygium Surgery
Surgical removal of fibrovascular growths from the cornea using conjunctival autografts
3. Corneal Collagen Cross-Linking (CXL)
A minimally invasive treatment for keratoconus to strengthen the cornea and halt disease progression
4. Management of Corneal Ulcers and Infections
Medical and surgical management of infectious keratitis, chemical injuries, and trauma-related corneal damage
5. Treatment of Corneal Scars and Opacities
Surgical polishing (superficial keratectomy) or transplant as required
6. Artificial Cornea (Keratoprosthesis)
For patients unsuitable for traditional transplants
7. Ocular Surface Reconstruction
For patients with chronic surface damage due to chemical burns, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, or autoimmune diseases
